Fall In Kansas City
It is a surreal feeling that we are now going to be living in the Midwest for a bit and it is not just a quick vacation. I have been saying for a while that I would like to have the chance to get “bored” with my family, instead of the craziness of seeing everyone and doing everything because we only have a week or two to be together a year. Our first week in Kansas City was very laid back and much welcomed!

The weather was beautiful for our first few days. It was so nice, that Billy was really wishing we had packed some shorts in our suitcase. One benefit of being back in the Midwest, is that you do get a few really nice days every once in a while during the Fall/Winter months. Winter does not last for 7 months like it does in Montana. On one of the nice days we went to a restaurant called Chicken N’ Pickle to have a drink and play Pickleball with Autumn. Pickleball is so popular these days, so it was tough to get an indoors reservation. It was pretty windy outside and made for some challenging pickleball, but I think that made it even more fun!
While there we spent some quality time volunteering for a really cool company that reuses and repurposes just about everything that you can think of. From bra pads to old prescription pill bottles. The organization invites the homeless population in to work at the store that sells donated art supplies and repurposed items in exchange for food, warm clothes and supplies. Autumn had thought that we would likely be sorting through donations, but instead we were shaving down the edges of cut prescription bottles and hooking them together with wire. The purpose of this project was to make a frame for what was to become a “coral reef” out of used prescription bottles. This will eventually be put into an artistic ocean expo. Our fingers were a little sore at the end of our time, but we are excited to see how the final project turns out. If you are looking for a place to donate old craft supplies or volunteer opportunities, check out www.scrapskc.org! When we were finished at Scraps, we headed over to City Barrel Brewing for lunch and a beverage. City Barrel Brewing is one of our favorite watering holes in Kansas City. They have a beer called “Rad AF” and you better believe that we are all into that! Their food is quite tasty as well! Next up, was to meet Asa and Kelsey for Kelsey’s brother’s wrestling match. He is in his final season at University of Missouri, so we are excited to be able to catch some matches this year. Being the hop hounds we are, we couldn’t say no to a mid-day beer at the Cinder Block Brewery. Nothing better than sampling the local flavors!
For an evening out with the Early family, we decided to head to Andy’s Frozen Custard. If you don’t know about this spot, put it at the top of your list when you find yourself in Missouri! Frozen custard mixed with any kind of sweets, sauces and additions your mind can comprehend. Pro tip for this spot, a small is huge and a medium will put you in a custard induced coma!
On Sunday we met with our friends Kyle and Kate from MT. They were in town for a KC Chiefs game and we were able to grab a drink with them at dive bar called The Peanut. For just a little bit, things felt like normal…like we didn’t just pick up our lives and move across the country! It was so fun to see them in KC! We then went out for a date night at Gram and Dun. We ate octopus for the first time and the salmon was some of the best salmon that we have ever had. We would 10/10 recommend eating there! Our night cap drinks came in the form of a drool worth Whiskey Sour and a Toasted Marshmallow cocktail that was almost too good to want to finish it as a quiet cocktail bar called Verdigris.
Another highlight of the trip was dinner at Louie’s Wine Dive. The Winter Squash Ravioli and the Chicken Risotto were amazing! It is so nice to be able to get a night out with Autumn and Andy now that they have a live-in babysitter. 🤣 Also, thanks Briley for the brownies!!!
As fast as we arrived, we find ourselves packing our things back into the car; this time for the last section of the drive. Filled to the brim and as scattered as things could possibly be, we settle into the car for the final push to our new HQ in Kriksville, MO.
Time to hit the road and finally get all of our stuff out of our car! We hope the U-Haul Box made it…!
